Hey everyone! Welcome back to The Coop with Meyer Hatchery – where we talk all things poultry in hopes of inspiring crazy chicken keepers and educating future flock owners. We’re glad to have you tuning in for this brief mid-week break as we provide a Meyer Moment to cover relevant happenings.

Let’s take a Meyer Moment to talk about how to care for your flock during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Its top of mind for most individuals as the Stay At Home order has been put into effect for many states including Ohio. For homesteads and farms across the United States not only do individuals have to think of their friends and family, but also their flocks!

Here are some of our first-hand tips for caring for your flock during the COVID-19 Stay At Home Order.

First, many agriculture businesses are still operating as an essential business. Meyer Hatchery not only ships chicks nationwide but also operates a store in Polk, Ohio. Meaning our staff is braving the frontlines to ensure your flock is well taken care of. Whether you’re visiting us or any farm supply store be sure to double-check their store hours. While still in operation, a lot of businesses have shortened their hours to help in reducing exposure.

Next, check their pick-up or shipping options. With the recent order put into effect a lot of essential businesses are now offering different shipping options or curbside pick-up. As many of you know we have a drive-thru for feed pick-up. However, we’ve made our drive-thru full service during this time. This now allows you to place your chick and supply orders online and have your order brought to your vehicle. This reduces the number of individuals in-store, keeping our employees at lower risk, as well as our customers!

Also, think of ways you can consolidate trips into town. Are you picking up an order of chicks? If so, do you have starter feed? Brooder light bulbs? Pine shavings? Make a list and check it twice to again reduce the number of trips you have to make from home. Also, stock up! Now we are not encouraging you to panic buy, but we do encourage you to get 2-3 weeks of feed and supplies so you can stay at home and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Do you sell eggs or maybe even provide eggs to your neighbors? You may want to consider temporarily holding off on collecting and reusing egg cartons from other households. There are conflicting reports on how long the virus can last on surfaces, so take this step as a precaution during the COVID-19 Pandemic. And remember, there currently is no evidence that this strain of the coronavirus is transmittable to other species including poultry. So your birds are safe!

Lastly, let nothing go to waste! As we raid our pantry’s to make the most of our meals remember your chickens will love the scraps! Vegetables, cooked grains, oatmeal, fruit, scrambled eggs, and yogurt are just a few items your chickens will appreciate.

Together, we will get through this. And that’s your weekly Moment with Meyer.

Enjoy the rest of your week and as always thank you for listening!
